What is Low Vision?

  • Many of the eye conditions related to refractive errors can be corrected by glasses, contact lenses and surgeries, however Low Vision is a condition that can’t be fixed with such traditional procedures. It needs specialized devices called ‘Low Vision Aids’ which help in maximizing the vision and improving the quality of life. Low vision is an eye condition where a person finds difficulty in performing everyday activities like reading and driving.

Causes:

  • Many different eye conditions can cause low vision, but the most common causes are Diabetic Retinopathy, Age Related Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, and congenital retinal disorders.

 Screening:

  • Low vision can be detected by a comprehensive dilated eye examination to diagnose specific diseases that are causing the deteriorated vision and then a complete functional vision assessment using specific tests like depth perception, visual field, contrast sensitivity, glare test and color vision.

Prevention:

  • Low vision can be prevented by early diagnosis and management of certain eye diseases that causes the poor vision.

Hereditary:

  • Yes, it can be hereditary. Some individuals can be born with a genetic condition that limits their sight from birth, but most often, low vision results from developing an ocular disease over one’s lifetime. The most common conditions that can result in someone suffering from low vision are diabetes, macular degeneration, and glaucoma.

In conclusion, this condition is not age specific and any age group can experience it. Being proactive with regular check ups is one of the most recommended way to avoid ending up with low vision.
