We make highly valuable resources available to the professionals who train at Barraquer, such as the chance to undertake an Observership at the Centre (which includes a large number of patients every year with cases that are difficult to find), contact with eye doctors in your specialist area, and surgical internships using latest generation technology.
WetLab
The new surgical instrucion laboratory, WetLab, pioneering in Spain, enables us to hold courses in which we put into practice ophthalmic surgery techniques in a setting that simulates the characteristics of a real surgical theatre, excluding the patient from the learning cycle. The operating tables are equipped with surgical microscopes and phacoemulsifiers, slit lamps and the other instruments required in surgery.
Thanks to this equipment, the student can undertake an individual practice on anatomical parts under the supervision of a Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre instructor or an eye surgeon, learning the techniques step by step and perfecting their handling of the instruments.
3D simulator
The EyeSi system, a cutting-edge 3D simulator, reproduces the conditions of intraocular surgery simulating them virtually through the lens of the microscope. It is a piece of educational software for surgical experience and works in an adaptive way, similar to a videogame: as the student's skills improve, the level of difficulty of the exercises increases until the student reaches an optimum level of competence.
This system allows the student to undertake cataract and vitreo-retinal surgery step by step, in addition to providing a detailed exercise performance report on the time invested as well as the level of expertise.
Dome operating theatre
The Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre operating theatres are equipped with latest generation instruments and, in addition, they provide the unheard of opportunity to attend any surgery live thanks to the emblematic transparent domes covering them. Without any need to undergo the sterilisation process, any professional can go behind the surgical amphitheatre glass and witness the procedures just a few centimetres from the operating field.
Learning is complemented with images from the surgical microscopes that are reproduced simultaneously on an internal circuit television. This also allows attendees to view the procedure from the surgeon's perspective. These facilities can hold a large number of observers in excellent viewing conditions that are comfortable yet do not interfere with the surgical work.
Library
The Josefa Moner de Barraquer Library is an iconic part of the institution. With the aim of facilitating the preparation of work and research, it has a respository of more than 10,000 books, multimedia ophthalmic material, hundreds of ophthalmology-specific magazine subscriptions–some of which we have been receiving since the 19th century–and an archive of less frequently consulted ancient publications. It also has various computers, WiFi, a photocopier and a reading room that holds up to 20 people.
Auditoriums
The Barraquer Institute has two auditoriums specifically for teaching and medical and corporate events, both internal and external. With a total capacity for more than 140 people, one located in the very Centre building itself and another in front of it, these complete the Barraquer Institute as places to hold student meetings and exams as well as bespoke training sessions, product presentations and other events with professionals or external partner companies.
