Refractive surgery is the name we give to the group of surgical techniques that aim to correct refractive errors of the eye (myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism) and thus eliminate—or at least reduce—the dependence on glasses or contacts.
We can divide them into techniques that use a laser to modify the curvature of the cornea and techniques used to implant an intraocular lens.
Due to its reliability and safety, refractive laser surgery (LASIK, PRK and SMILE) is the most commonly used method of correcting mild to moderate refractive errors, for example myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism.
In selected cases, we use intraocular techniques including phakic lens implantation in individuals under 45 years old which respect the crystalline lens, or extracting of the crystalline lens and replacing it with an intraocular lens in older people who may or may not have cataracts.
