What does a medical appointment involve at Barraquer?
Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre has a team of highly specialised ophthalmologists who offer comprehensive eye care, covering the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of all eye pathologies.
1. Appointment with the optometrist
First of all, an optometrist specialising in refraction will check your visual acuity and correct your prescription. They will then pass your information to the ophthalmologist.
- Remember the important aspects of your appointment: the reason for the consultation, your personal and family medical history, the medication you take, whether you suffer from allergies or not, as well as any general or eye surgery you have undergone in the past.
- If you are a contact lens user, we recommend removing them 24 hours before your check-up.
This consultation complements the appointment with the ophthalmologist. All patients, new or current, undergo it.
2. Appointment with the ophthalmologist
Depending on the reason for your appointment, you will be welcomed by a professional from our medical team of ophthalmologists subspecialised in one or several of the following areas:
- Cataracts
- Refractive surgery
- Cornea and eye surgery
- Strabismus
- Glaucoma
- Paediatric ophthalmology
- Ocular oncology
- Orbital and oculoplastic surgery
- Neuro-opthalmology
- Retina and vitreous
- Uveitis and eye inflammation
After evaluating the results of your previous appointment with the optometrist, the ophthalmologist will take your intraocular pressure and perform a comprehensive eye examination of both the anterior segment and the back of the eye. The objective is to rule out possible pathologies, if there are any, and if there are, to provide an exact diagnosis to indicate the most appropriate treatment.
For this reason, it may be that after the eye examination, the first doctor you see, feels you should be referred to another ophthalmologist in one of our other areas of specialisation.
It may also be the case that, to get a more precise diagnosis,–or if you have one healthy eye and are interested in undergoing elective surgery, for example, for aesthetic reasons–the ophthalmologist will need to perform complementary tests.
3. Complementary tests
Only if the ophthalmologist orders them. In that case, you will be referred to our visual function department, which is comprised of a team of professionals subspecialised in the following areas:
- Refraction
- Biometry
- Refractive surgery
- Campimetry
- Orthoptics
- Contactology
Where possible, our Centres offers patients the chance to perform the tests the same day after visiting the ophthalmologist. This option is very practical for patients who do not live in Barcelona or who are simply seeking to optimise their time. After undergoing the required tests, you will have to return to see your assigned ophthalmologist.
4. Assessment with the ophthalmologist
Your doctor will assess the results of the additional tests to confirm the diagnosis. After studying your case, the doctor will explain the treatment options available and reach an agreement with you about which one to follow. Our medical team offers highly personalised treatment in which the patient's preferences are the priority.

Does Barraquer have agreements with mutual insurance companies?
Yes, our Centre has an agreement with the main mutual insurance companies and insurers. You can see them here. We recommend that you always check the cover you have taken out.
Are the complementary tests included in the price of the appointment?
No, the consultation at the Centre only includes the appointment with the optometrist and the ophthalmologist. However, the mutual insurance companies with whom we have an agreement usually cover the complementary tests although some will require authorisation. Otherwise, you will be informed of the corresponding amount in advance.
How long does an appointment last at Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre and why?
Given the Centre's high level of specialisation, each appointment usually lasts between one and two hours.This time is only a guide and it will depend on each patient's situation. We invest the necessary time in each patient.
Do you do walk-ins without an appointment?
Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre has a 24h Emergency Service. It is open 365 days a year to see to patients without an appointment. Outside of this service, you will need to make an appointment.
