Many times when we go to the ophthalmologist, we leave with a recipe of drops that can be eye drops or artificial tears.
Here at Barraquer we would like to give you some tips to follow before putting the drops in the eyes:
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Make sure the eye drops or artificial tears have not expired.
- Follow your doctor's instructions and make sure you have informed him or her if you take any other medication.
- Prevent the tip of the dropper from touching your eye.
- If you need to put more than one type of eye drops, wait at least 5 to 10 minutes for the second eye drop.
How to apply the drops to the eyes:
- Tilt your head back while sitting, standing or lying down. With your index finger lower your lower eyelid to form a space, a pocket, where to place the drop. Make a drop fall into the pocket.
- Slowly release lower eyelid. Close your eyes but try not to force them or squeeze them. This could cause the drops to come out of the eye.
- Press gently on the inner (closest to the nose) angle with your index finger and thumb for two to three minutes. This will help keep the drops in contact with the eye longer without coming out of the tear duct.
- Dry the contour of the eyes to remove any excess.
