You should always go see the ophthalmologist when floaters suddenly appear for the first time. In addition, we would recommend returning to the ophthalmologist if the floaters increase in number and size, since, as we said before, this may be related to a retinal break. Patients shouldn’t delay their visit if a fixed stain (scotoma) appears in the visual field, as they could be suffering from retinal detachment.
When floaters are very dense and not very mobile, they may cause very symptomatic blurred vision and ostensibly compromise the patient’s quality of life, at this point seeing a consultant ophthalmologist is recommended.
