Soft Contact Lenses: Advantages and Disadvantages

11/01/2017

Advantages

  • Increased initial comfort
  • Less time to get used to
  • Lenses are more stable (they are bigger and they usually move less)
  • Ideal for sports with risk of impact
  • Its use does not usually deform the cornea
  • It is more difficult to introduce particles between the contact lens (CL) and cornea

Disadvantages

  • Lower duration
  • More difficult to manipulate
  • They have less gas permeability than modern rigid materials
  • Not all optical powers are manufactured
  • If they are not special (toric), they do not correct corneal astigmatism greater than 0.75 dioptres.
  • The vision obtained with these CLs may be lower than with rigid CLs
  • Do not correct irregular astigmatism
  • Greater "lipophilia" (they get dirtier)
  • Increased risk of contamination
  • Cleaning and maintenance more complex and expensive (if done properly)
  • Produce more allergic problems
  • May cause more eye dryness than rigid
  • Less tear exchange when blinking, (they move too little)
  • Can easily break (do not pinch)
  • They are the ones that cause more eye problems and dropouts
