The treatment of dry eye will depend on its type, cause and severity.

  • Application of moisturizers: treatment with artificial tears or preservative-free gels at the appropriate frequency.
  • Occlusion of tear canaliculi: In advanced cases, tear loss can be limited by occluding the tear drainage canaliculi with plugs. Anti-inflammatories can be used to improve eyelids conditions or treat underlying systemic diseases.
  • Autologous serum or EPRP eye drops: eye drops enriched with growth factors for cases with greater involvement of the ocular surface.
  • Intense pulsed light or microexfoliation: activation of the Meibomian glands using intense pulsed light or deep cleansing of the eyelids and eyelashes.

Treatment with intense pulsed light (IPL)

One of the most effective treatments for dry eyes is IPL. It uses polychromatic pulsed light to activate the Meibomian glands, essential in the production of the lipid layer of tears. This light process warms and unclogs the glands, facilitating production and improving tear quality.

As a result, patients experience decreased irritation and itching, less redness, and improved visual clarity.

Our technology

Lumenis M22™ IPL with OPT™

6th generation IPL with the most advanced technology, OPT™ and SapphireCool™ and an efficacy rate of 97%, making it the intense pulsed light with the most published scientific evidence.

How is IPL treatment performed?

Usually done in 4 sessions, 2-3 weeks apart. The number of sessions needed may vary depending on the severity of the condition and the patient's individual response to treatment.

  • First session of 45 minutes. Subsequent sessions of 15 minutes.
  • Painless treatment with topical anaesthesia.
  • No side effects.
  • Includes manual drainage of the Meibomian glands in the same session.

Results with Optima IPL

  • Stops the vicious cycle of inflammation caused by Meibomian gland dysfunction.
  • Occludes abnormal vessels that perpetuate inflammation.
  • Decreases the level of pro-inflammatory mediators and inhibits the progression of inflammation.
  • Reduces the osmolarity of the tear film and, therefore, reduces inflammation at the ocular surface.
  • Decreases Demodex mites and reduces bacterial load.
  • Restores the morphology and functionality of the Meibomian glands.
