What does the treatment involve?

Eyelid microexfoliation is a deep clean of the eyelid margins recommended in cases of anterior blepharitis, a condition where there is inflammation of the eyelids, accompanied by the presence of scurf (similar to dandruff) which might be infected in some cases.

When is this treatment indicated?

We recommend it in stubborn cases of anterior blepharitis in which, even if the patient is consistent with their daily eyelid hygiene, a substance similar to dandruff remains at the base of the eyelashes. We also recommend it for people who cannot clean their eyelids themselves.

How is it performed?

It is a doctor's surgery procedure where the patient is sitting comfortably in a chair with a headrest. Anaesthetic drops are used to numb the eyes.

The deep clean of the base of eyelashes is performed with a small, wet rotating instrument. It removes or exfoliates the dandruff, the dead skin and residue at the base of the eyelashes. Both eyes, the upper and lower eyelashes are cleaned.

The eye is washed with saline solution and antibiotic drops are applied. The procedure lasts between 5 and 10 minutes. Some patients notice tickling or tingling during the procedure.

Results

Patients can notice the effect of cleaning immediately, as their eyelids will feel lighter and less inflamed. However, the patient must continue the treatment recommended by the doctor to avoid recurrence, as blepharitis is usually chronic.

Possible risks

It may cause corneal erosion if the patient does not sit still during the procedure or does not follow the hygienist's instructions.

Frequently asked questions

  • If the patient refuses to undergo the treatment, an improvement in the symptoms may take longer even though the patient cleans their eyelid at home on a daily basis. In some cases, when anterior blepharitis is not treated properly it may end up in an infection.

  • The procedure does not have to be repeated as long as the patient is compliant and meticulous in their eyelid hygiene. Patients who cannot properly undertake their eyelid hygiene may have to have the procedure repeated at 6-month intervals each year.
