World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year since 1991 on the initiative of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) due to the increase in the number of people affected worldwide. World Diabetes Day brings together millions of people from more than 160 countries around the world, and aims to raise awareness of this disease through events of all kinds.
Diabetes can affect vision by damaging the small blood vessels of the retina, the posterior layer of the eye, causing a severe decrease in vision, which is known as diabetic retinopathy. In many cases, this pathology does not cause symptoms until very advanced stages, so it is important that diabetic patients undergo periodic ophthalmological controls.
Early detection and timely treatment can prevent and slow progression to blindness.
