What can I do prevent fluid retention?

10/04/2020

If there isn't a medical reason for it, fluid retention may be due to bad eating habits and lifestyle. What can we do to prevent it?

  1. Reduce your use of salt. Get used to seasoning your food with herbs and spices.
  2. Avoid highly processed and/or foods high in sodium: soy sauce, ketchup, tinned foods, pickles, ready-made food, French fries, sausages, cheese, smoked foods, pâtés...
  3. Increase your daily consumption of food rich in potassium like fruit, leafy veg and legumes. They should form the basis of your diet.
  4. Maintain a healthy body weight as excess body fat makes it difficult for the body to store water properly.
  5. Hydrate yourself with water only. Drink whenever you are thirsty, but avoid alcoholic or sugary beverages because they will make you dehydrated (beer, wine, juice, soft drinks...). A good option is to make a bottle of water flavoured with pieces of fruit, herbs or spices like mint, star anise, cloves or cinnamon sticks.
  6. Stay active. A sedentary lifestyle is one of the main causes of fluid retention. Get moving! Avoid sitting for more than two hours without getting up.
  7. Rest. Make sure you get enough hours of good quality sleep.

Try these tips and we guarantee that you’ll soon see a change. And if you need help, consult a qualified professional.
